Population

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 63,021 in 1970 to 187,253 in 2010. That was an increase of 197.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 599 in 1970 to 16,441 in 2010. That was an increase of 2644.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.0 percent to 8.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 173.6 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the principal factor adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM remained the main factor in adding population.
